Do these advertising pieces look familiar? If so, you’ve been looking at the work of a Certificate of Interior Design alumnus, Lee Winnick!

That’s right! Lee Winnick, an Interior Design Certificate grad, and her talented creative team produced this campaign!

Lee WinnickLee Winnick has been working in advertising and graphic design for over 25 years in Los Angeles, London, and South Africa. It wasn’t until 2008 that she decided to take her passion of interior design to the next level and enroll in our Certificate program. It was in Eleanor Schrader’s Fundamentals of Interior Architecture that Lee’s love affair with interior design began.

ArcID Brochure

Lee Winnick helped design the new Arc+ID brochures

“UCLA Extension provided me with the education that I needed to put my passion to work and extend my current business offering to include interior design” says Lee. After graduating in 2012, Lee officially incorporated interior branding—a niche area of business—into her company, fundi.

Last June, Lee and her team of eight were hired by UCLA Extension’s marketing team to re-design the Arc+ID brochure. “It was very exciting to be involved with this project and to be able to give back to an organization that had given me so much,” exclaimed Lee.

But the projects didn’t stop there! Not long after this initial project, Lee found herself working yet again with the marketing team to conceptualize and execute a UCLA Extension advertising campaign to promote the overall institution. The campaign has been highly visible—with large outdoor billboards, street-pole banners, bus tails, digital advertising, animated displays, and more!

“This campaign expressed my experience of what being a student at UCLA Extension means,” Lee explains, “UCLA Extension is an incredible way to educate and equip oneself to achieve both career and personal goals. So our campaign messages—‘be what you wanted to be when you grew up’ and ‘go from work you to do work you love’—resonated directly with me. After graduating from the Interior Design program, I was able to make the transition from client-based work to more creative, challenging endeavors.”

We asked Lee to share a piece of advice for other ambitious students that may be looking to pursue a career in her field of work. “Love what you do and do what you love. The design business—whether it is graphic design or interior design—is extremely hard work. In the words of Charles Eames, ‘the details are not the details. They make the design.’ So as designers, we need to ‘sweat the small stuff’ as it really does matter!”

We are so grateful to have Lee Winnick share her design project adventures with us! If you have a success story, we want to hear about it! Click here.

And the awards for the 2015 Outstanding Instructors goes to…

Mark Owen and Rogerio Carvalheiro, recipients of the 2015 Outstanding Instructor Awards

…Mark Owen and Rogerio Carvalheiro for demonstrating excellence in teaching!

The Outstanding Instructor Awards ceremony is held annually to honor exemplary teachers in the Department of the Arts at UCLA Extension who have made outstanding contributions this year. For the 2015 awards, the Architecture + Interior Design Program was pleased to honor two of our instructors who have proved time and again to be an invaluable part of our program.

Mark Owen was born and raised in rural western Pennsylvania, not far from Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater”.  It was from his very first visit to that architectural masterpiece, at age 6, that he knew he wanted to be an Architect. As with most kids growing up at that time, he also became fascinated with the “California Lifestyle” and naturally left the farm within days of graduating high school to pursue his education at a little known school in Burbank, CA by the name of Woodbury University.  He received his BArch in 1994, the same year that Woodbury’s Architecture Program achieved NAAB accreditation. Shortly after graduating from Woodbury, he decided to pursue his Master of Architecture from UCLA Extension and focused on integrating “the computer” into his design process.

Since graduating from UCLA Extension, Mark has worked primarily on large scale Transportation and Aviation projects as well as a series of smaller, experimental residential projects including his own house. Mark also began teaching at Woodbury in 1999 and has since taught at Art Center College of Design, UCLA Extension, and Otis College of Art and Design. In his spare time he can be found building, racing, and riding anything with 2 wheels, as well as spending time with his family.

At the awards ceremony, few quotes about Mark written by his former students as well as the ARC+ID staff were read to the audience.

A past student of Mark’s wrote, “Mark is awesome. Patient, knowledgeable, and had a lot to offer students in the way of readying them for real world applications. I got a job in the interior design industry after just 10 weeks because of Mark, and this course. I can’t say enough!!”

Arc+ID Program Representative, Emily Heston, shared her experience working with Mark Owen: I have had the pleasure of being the Program Rep for Mark over the past few years and I find that he is always eager to teach every quarter. Mark’s passion for teaching and immense talent in AutoCAD and 3D design is evident in every class—just ask the students! They always rave about how much they’ve learned and their final projects certainly reflect their new skills. I think that the Arc+ID staff as well as our students would agree that, when Mark started teaching for us back in 2002, we hit the jackpot!”

Mark Owen teaches Digital Presentation III, Revit I and Revit II, classes that are part of the Certificate of Interior Design Program/Foundation Level. To enroll in Mark Owen’s classes, click here.

Rogerio Carvalheiro is the principal and founder of RCDF. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, Rogerio continued his studies and matriculated from UCLA’s Graduate School of Architecture. He has since worked with and been influenced by Philippe Stark, Julie Eizenberg, and Arthur Erickson. Along his twenty-year career he has gained considerable experience developing cultural, civic, commercial, residential, and hospitality projects. Rogerio is personally involved with each RCDF project.

Past honors for Rogerio include an award from the Los Angeles Downtown Business Bureau for “Best Interior Design” for TRAXX Restaurant and an Honor Award for work completed on Los Angeles Union Station by the American Institute of Landscape Architects. He was awarded the American Institute of Architects California Council Associate Award in 2012 and London Farm Tower, his recently completed competition entry was featured in the esteemed 2013 American Institute of Architecture’s Emerging Professionals Annual Exhibition in Washington, D.C.

Since 2008, he has regularly served as a critic at Cal Poly Pomona’s Department of Architecture reviewing both undergraduate and graduate level projects. Since 2012, he has been leading various advanced design studio courses at UCLA Extension’s Master of Interior Architecture program. In addition, Rogerio serves in the position of Associate Director to the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles Chapter 2013 Board of Directors and on the American Institute of Architects California Council Professional Practice Advisory Committee.

Like for Mark, a former student and an Arc+ID staff member also had some wonderful things to say about Rogerio:

A former student was quoted saying, “Rogerio truly cares about the students and their progress.  He is the best instructor I’ve had to date.  As a working professional, he takes a very forward-looking approach that is very real-world.  He is a positive and solution-oriented instructor.”

Suzanne Sheppard, the Program Advisor of the Arc+ID Program, shared her thoughts on Rogerio: “In 2011, I received an email from Rogerio in which he expressed his desire to become associate with the Arc+ID Program. When I researched Rogerio’s body of architectural design and interiors work, I couldn’t believe our Program’s good fortune! I knew that our students would truly value his design aesthetic, which is eclectic, transitional, and beautiful, and that they would greatly profit by learning from him. To this day, I continue to hear students praising Rogerio’s insight into their design intent and his thoughtful, positive, constructive critiques of their work. They always say that they have learned so much about being the best designer that they can be.”

Rogerio Carvalheiro teaches Interior Architecture Studio II, the last class in the Certificate of Interior Design Program/Foundation Level as well as Interior Architecture Studio III, the first class in the Master of Interior Architecture Program. To enroll in Rogerio’s classes, click here.
