WestEdge is a four-day event that offers the best in modern design, all in an environment designed to engage, entertain and inspire. The fair offers the opportunity to shop from premium home furnishings brands-many new to the West Coast and meet the designers behind thousands of inspiring products. In addition, attendees gain insight from leading names in the design industry with a full series of educational programs and special events.

The event includes a great panel discussion and one-on-one meet & greet’s which will be wonderful for students, alumni, and emerging professionals to attend! (See flyer for more details). This panel will really expose all students to different aspects of potential careers in design. Stephen Viscusi is moderating this – he is a global recruiter in the interior design industry. On Saturday October 17, 2015 from 11:30AM to 4:30PM, grab your portfolio and head down to the UCLA Extension Lindbrook Center for the annual ASID UCLA Extension Portfolio Workshop! This year’s event will feature a panelist discussion and Q&A session with eleven special industry professionals–some of whom, such as Charrisse Johnston, Lucinda Pace, and Laura Schwartz-Muller, are graduates of the UCLA Extension/Cal Poly Pomona Master of Interior Architecture Program. Following the discussion will be a one-on-one portfolio and résumé review.

Abeer Sweis will be a speaker at Meet the Architects Night for Dwell on Design 2015!

As a kick-off to Dwell’s West Side Home Tour, Synthesis founder & CEO and Masters program instructor, Abeer Sweis, will be among the speakers at the Meet the Architects Night. Abeer will be discussing the challenges, inspirations, and successes in designing and building their featured project: Monhoff Renovation.

This project was also featured in Dwell’s 6 Sensitive Renovations of Iconic California Architects — a “who’s who” list of California homes originally designed by Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, Frederick Monhoff, A. Quincy Jones, Joseph Eichler, and John Lautner — all carefully restored to their midcentury glory.

In February 2015, Synthesis and the Vukadinovich family received the Santa Monica Conservancy Preservation Award for Renovation!

This five hour course has been prepared to refresh architects, developers and like-minded professionals working in the commercial and mixed use residential arenas. By exploring key FHA and CBC requirements in the context of common mistakes that are made, an understanding of the major requirements that impact spatial design will be obtained. Lessons from case studies in seminal residential accessibility lawsuits as well as commercial accessibility lawsuits will be explored, and methods for addressing non-compliance will be addressed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
– Identify key accessibility requirements arising from the 2013 CBC and Fair Housing Act pertaining to mixed use residential accessibility;
– Review and become familiar with common accessibility errors and omissions in commercial and multi-family residential occupancies;
– Identify basic requirements and code compliance strategies for addressing accessibility requirements in existing buildings; and
– Review case studies, key laws, & interpretations of accessibility requirements in California and the U.S. Department of Justice

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Mr. Wittasek, P.E., CFEI, LEED AP is a fire protection engineer and life safety consultant, specializing in accessibility, fire protection engineering, building and fire codes, failure analysis, and origin and cause determination. In this capacity, Mr. Wittasek leads Exponent’s efforts in addressing fire protection engineering and regulatory concerns in the built environment. He has more than 15 years of experience providing accessibility and building codes consulting and has spent more than a decade as an instructor/adjunct at the UCLA Extension and Cal Poly Pomona.
