Congratulations to Northcutt Scholarship Winner, Tatiana Ukhvatkina!

Tatiana Ukhvatkina is a current student of UCLA Extension’s Architecture and Interior Design Program. Although she has always had an interest in art and design, Tatiana spent most of her school years studying economics and math in order to make her family happy. However, when she moved away from her country of origin, Russia, she let her passion grow.

Tatiana decided to take a few design classes and could not stop. About a year ago, she took her first step in the Interior Design field and interned with a well recognized celebrity designer. During her internship she gained excellent experience and knew this was something that she wanted to do. In order to fulfill her own professional goal, Tatiana continues to further her education in the program, while working with a successful residential designer in Los Angeles.

Designed by Tatiana Ukhvatkina.

The James R. Northcutt Scholarship for Advanced Students awards $3,000 in tuition credit twice a year to students who have completed Interior Architecture Studio II. The award is based upon the work demonstrated in projects from Interior Architecture Studio II and the selection of the final recipient is by portfolio review, conducted by the scholarship committee and invited members of the professional design community.

Congratulations to Philip Gill, Winner of the First David Barrett Memorial Scholarship from the ASID Foundation!

Hats off to our fellow UCLA Extension Arc-ID student, Philip Gill, as the first recipient of the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship through the ASID Foundation!

The ASID Foundation has chosen Philip Gill as the first recipient of the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship.  Gill is a master’s candidate of Interior Architecture in the collaborative study program between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension and California Polytechnic University, Pomona. The scholarship jury recognized Gill’s thoughtful work and clear demonstration of classical design.

After completing his Master’s program, Gill intends to establish an interior design firm focusing on residential interior design and furniture design in San Diego. He plans to use part of his $12,000 scholarship to attend classes at the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICA&A) in New York City, and he eventually hopes to teach and establish a custom furniture line.

“There remains a need for design that is sensitive to the history and historical styles of the area, such as Spanish Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts,” especially as it relates to southern California, Gill explains.

The David Barrett Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student’s work which demonstrates a continuing interest and ability in utilizing classical designs. The scholarship was established in memory of David Barrett, FASID, who died on Dec. 8, 2008. Throughout his 58-year career, Barrett practiced mainly residential design. He has lectured, appeared on television and his work has been published in several major design publications.
