Last night, UCLA Extension honored 16 instructors for teaching with exemplary dedication and consistent excellence, for developing real-world curricula and for mentoring working adults and international students who seek continued professional education from one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most comprehensive continuing education providers.

The Distinguished Instructor Awards were presented to working professionals involved in such current-day and growing fields as environmental compliance, crisis communications and public relations, accounting principles, interior design, social media marketing and electrical engineering.

Kat Fern, ASID, IDEC

Arc_ID instructor, Katherine Fern, was honored with the 2012 Distinguished Instructor Award. Kat is a graduate of our interior design program and holds a BA from UCLA.

She has served as Faculty Advisor for the ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter, Arc_ID 2007  CIDA Accreditation review committee member, and 2011-2012 ASID Los Angeles Chapter President-Elect.

Kat is also the recipient of UCLA Extension Department of the Arts Outstanding Instructor Award 2007 and ASID National Faculty Advisor of the Year 2010. She has over 15 years experience as an interior designer and extensive experience in financial and business management.

“Instructors honored this year include those who have been teaching at UCLA for more than 20 years, are respected among their peers nationally and internationally, develop curricula that meet or exceed the needs of companies or are well published,” said Cathy Sandeen, Dean of UCLA Extension and Continuing Education.  “And, like all of our instructor force of more than 2,500, these professionals offer real-world networking and career insights.”

Congratulations, Kat!

Congratulations to Northcutt Scholarship Winner, Tatiana Ukhvatkina!

Tatiana Ukhvatkina is a current student of UCLA Extension’s Architecture and Interior Design Program. Although she has always had an interest in art and design, Tatiana spent most of her school years studying economics and math in order to make her family happy. However, when she moved away from her country of origin, Russia, she let her passion grow.

Tatiana decided to take a few design classes and could not stop. About a year ago, she took her first step in the Interior Design field and interned with a well recognized celebrity designer. During her internship she gained excellent experience and knew this was something that she wanted to do. In order to fulfill her own professional goal, Tatiana continues to further her education in the program, while working with a successful residential designer in Los Angeles.

The James R. Northcutt Scholarship for Advanced Students awards $3,000 in tuition credit twice a year to students who have completed Interior Architecture Studio II. The award is based upon the work demonstrated in projects from Interior Architecture Studio II and the selection of the final recipient is by portfolio review, conducted by the scholarship committee and invited members of the professional design community.
