HD/West Elm Student Product Design Competition
Deadline has been extended to May 3rd, 2019
West Elm has partnered with Hospitality Design (HD) magazine on the inaugural Student Product Design Competition. Earlier this year, West Elm launched a collection of restaurant tables targeting the hospitality industry. These tables offer a series of material options for bases and tops. The competition is focused on designing a new chair and bar/counter stools to add to the collection.
The chair does not have to match the tables in the collection. The chair should be able to sit with the tables easily and work in both casual and more formal environment. It should be aesthetically neutral to fit into the West Elm assortment but also offer something new to the range.
The chair should have a metal frame/legs with a wood and/or upholstered seat. No plastics should be used. Through a series of color and finish options, the chair should be able to be integrated into various styles of décor. Attention should be paid to West Elm’s own palette of materials and colors and these should be incorporated into the chair.
The chair should have an 18-inch seat height and enough back support to sit comfortably for a couple of hours. The chair can also have variations such as side and arm versions and must also easily be adapted into a bar and counter stool. Ideally, the chair would be able to be stacked for storage.
Finally, the chair should retail around $149-199.
