Mixed Use Residential Accessibility Blunders – Navigating California and FHA Accessibility Requirements for New and Existing Construction

This five hour course has been prepared to refresh architects, developers and like-minded professionals working in the commercial and mixed use residential arenas. By exploring key FHA and CBC requirements in the context of common mistakes that are made, an understanding of the major requirements that impact spatial design will be obtained. Lessons from case studies in seminal residential accessibility lawsuits as well as commercial accessibility lawsuits will be explored, and methods for addressing non-compliance will be addressed.
– Identify key accessibility requirements arising from the 2013 CBC and Fair Housing Act pertaining to mixed use residential accessibility;
– Review and become familiar with common accessibility errors and omissions in commercial and multi-family residential occupancies;
– Identify basic requirements and code compliance strategies for addressing accessibility requirements in existing buildings; and
– Review case studies, key laws, & interpretations of accessibility requirements in California and the U.S. Department of Justice
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Mr. Wittasek, P.E., CFEI, LEED AP is a fire protection engineer and life safety consultant, specializing in accessibility, fire protection engineering, building and fire codes, failure analysis, and origin and cause determination. In this capacity, Mr. Wittasek leads Exponent’s efforts in addressing fire protection engineering and regulatory concerns in the built environment. He has more than 15 years of experience providing accessibility and building codes consulting and has spent more than a decade as an instructor/adjunct at the UCLA Extension and Cal Poly Pomona.
