designLAb celebrates its fifth year on Friday, January 22 from 5 to 9:30 PM with new art, architecture, design, sound and taste exhibitions as well as one-night only special performances. MOCA PDC also opens with Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road (for MOCA Members at 7PM), steps away from the designLAb galleries. designLAb is also pleased to welcome Rebecca Kopp, who serves as Varola Gallery and designLAb Manager. Ms Kopp will be working closely with designLAb Curator Helen Varola to explore and promote new cultural links between designLAb and the art and design community locally and internationally.

About designLAb 

designLAb provides a platform to explore art that addresses the design center‘s unique context of interior design, spanning a variety of art disciplines and media. designLAb is conceived and directed by New York-based curator Helen Varola and made possible by Charles S. Cohen, owner and president of Pacific Design Center, collector and generous supporter of MOCA Pacific Design Center.

designLAb is located on the second floor of PDC’s Blue Building and most galleries are open Monday – Friday from 11AM – 5PM or by appointment on Saturday. Enter the Blue Building on Melrose Avenue and use the escalators or elevators to visit the second floor.

Please also visit MOCA Pacific Design Center, open 11AM – 5PM, Tuesday – Friday; 11AM – 6PM on Saturday and Sunday; and closed on Monday. Admission to MOCA Pacific Design Center is always free.

Parking

Valet, garage, and street parking are available and complimentary parking for press is available by calling the PDC Parking Office one day in advance, Monday – Friday at 310-360-6417.

WestWeek 2010! (March 24 & 25)

Hello all, we want to remind you that next week is Pacific Design Center’s West Week 2010! Keynote speakers include Mayer Rus, Vicente Wolf, Vanessa de Vargas, Roter Thomas, and MANY more. In addition to speakers you will be able to tour showrooms and check out previews of new product lines! There are also excellent showroom programs scheduled with Holly Hunt, Donghia, Schumacher, etc! Wednesday evening they will also hold an awards ceremony for the “Stars of Design” 2010 Award Winners presented by Charles S. Cohen, President and CEO of PDC. Be sure to check out PDC’s monthly Designer Lecture Series as well. Visit the PDC visitor info page if you have further questions.

Internship Opportunity

Attention Students: Pacific Design Center is currently seeking Marketing Interns! The internship does not involve active design work but it can still be taken for credit. Just keep in mind that the course fee will need to be paid in order to receive credit for the course. This could be an excellent networking and resume building opportunity for the right student. If you are interested in applying email Lynda Brenner at lbrenner@pacificdesigncenter.com (be sure to attach a resume and make note of the fact that you are an Arc_ID student!)

Pacific Design Center has announced another lecture as part of it’s 2009 Lecture series! This Thursday, October 8th at 11am Carelton Varney will be discussing and signing his book “Houses in My Heart” at the Blue Conference Center, Suite B259. RSVP Requested: 310-360-6418. – Also, AIA wants us to remind you about their 2009 Design Awards! A.C. Martin Partners has received the very special “Twenty-Five Year Award” which recognizs, “architectural design of enduring significance, and is conferred upon a project that has stood the test of time for 25 to 35 years, which has contributed meaningfully to American life and architecture.” They are being recognized for the St. Basil Roman Catholic Church in Miracle Mile. The ceremony for all the recipients will take place at American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre on Wednesday, October 21st. Tickets can be ordered online HERE.

– Lastly (but perhaps most importantly) the ASID student chapter at UCLA Extension is hosting their 4th annual mixer on Sunday October 25th at from 3pm-6pm. The mixer will be at Il Morro Restuarant (11400 W. Olympic Blvd) and features hors d’oeuvres and raffle prizes (including: a Humanscale World Chair, UCLA Extension ARC_ID $595 class credit, A LEED GA study package, gorgeous custom 3form bracelets, and more!)
