Call for Donations: Upward Bound House, Culver City

From the press release:

Upward Bound House, www.upwardboundhouse.org, provides emergency and transitional housing for children and their parents, serving more than 45 families with minor children each year. The program boasts a 95% success rate of families securing – and retaining – permanent housing. Family homelessness is on the rise across the Los Angeles region. The LA County Department of Public Social Services saw a 40% surge in homeless families between 2008 and 2009. The mission of Upward Bound House is to eliminate homelessness among families with children in Los Angeles by providing housing, supportive services and advocacy. Since 1997, more than 1,100 individuals – including over 650 children – have graduated from Upward Bound House and are no longer homeless.

18 designers and individuals have each adopted a room to decorate in a new 18 room family shelter, Upward Bound House, in Culver City due to open Feb 1. Each room will provide temporary housing for 4 families over 1 year which is 72 families each year! We realize it’s a tight timeline, but we are looking for donated items by the end of January. We have received an incredible response from dozens of vendors and individuals already including paint for each room from Benjamin Moore and a Williams Sonoma gift card, Restoration Hardware and Inner Gardens.

We will continue to push major media coverage with national magazines, blogs, TV and radio. And of course, all donations are tax deductible.

LIST OF DESIRED ITEMS is as follows (and keep in mind that each unit needs to have 4 sets of most of what’s listed in the kitchen and bath so each family gets new items but we would be grateful for any contribution):
Small dining tales and chairs, lounge chairs, shelving units, side tables, bedside tables, dressers
3 dishtowels, 1 set of plastic food storage containers (i.e., Tupperware), 4 full sets of re-usable plastic cutlery, cutlery caddy, and 4 thick re-usable plastic plates, bowls and cups
Table, wall and floor lamps
LINENS (4 full sets)
Bed (full & twin), bath (full sets – bath, hand, washcloth), shower curtains
Towel racks, robe/towel/coat hooks, tissue holder
Alarm clock radio
rugs, robes, window treatments, waste baskets, welcome mat, clothes hangers, plants

We look forward to receiving more donations, answering any questions and working with everyone to help make this project a success. Upward Bound House thanks you in advance for your incredible generosity and support in getting us the help we need to make this amazing!”

Every little bit helps! We encourage our students and friends to donate if they can. You can call Upward Bound House at: (310) 458-7779 or email them via the website.
