Hats off to our fellow UCLA Extension Arc-ID student, Philip Gill, as the first recipient of the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship through the ASID Foundation!
The ASID Foundation has chosen Philip Gill as the first recipient of the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship. Gill is a master’s candidate of Interior Architecture in the collaborative study program between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension and California Polytechnic University, Pomona. The scholarship jury recognized Gill’s thoughtful work and clear demonstration of classical design.
After completing his Master’s program, Gill intends to establish an interior design firm focusing on residential interior design and furniture design in San Diego. He plans to use part of his $12,000 scholarship to attend classes at the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICA&A) in New York City, and he eventually hopes to teach and establish a custom furniture line.
“There remains a need for design that is sensitive to the history and historical styles of the area, such as Spanish Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts,” especially as it relates to southern California, Gill explains.
The David Barrett Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student’s work which demonstrates a continuing interest and ability in utilizing classical designs. The scholarship was established in memory of David Barrett, FASID, who died on Dec. 8, 2008. Throughout his 58-year career, Barrett practiced mainly residential design. He has lectured, appeared on television and his work has been published in several major design publications.
